Police open 3R probe against Australian blogger

Police are investigating an Australian blogger over his online posts that allegedly attacked the Malay rulers.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said Bukit Aman has opened a 3R investigation against Murray Hunter, whom they believe is currently residing in Bangkok, Thailand.

A 3R probe refers to cases that touch on three sensitive issues in the country, namely race, religion, and royalty, and is usually handled by a special team in Bukit Aman called the Classified Investigation Unit.

“We have opened an investigation (against the blogger) related to 3R issues,” he said, as quoted by news portal Scoop this morning.

According to the report, Razarudin said police have also requested Interpol’s assistance to locate the blogger.

Hunter (above) is an independent researcher and former professor with the Prince of Songkla University and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (Unimap).

He had been active in commenting about Malaysia’s politics through his blog posts, including making criticisms against the government and touching on 3R issues.

According to news reports, Unimap had on Jan 31 issued a statement distancing itself from the blogger, stressing that Hunter was no longer attached to the university.

Its corporate communications arm said Hunter’s service with Unimap was terminated in 2015 and has nothing to do with Unimap since.
